Crossing the river with dogs. Problem solving for college students (English)
0 references
In essence, the book is an extensive collection of mathematical puzzles and problems for high school or college students. \newline The problems are ordered in terms of usable heuristic strategies which are partly inspired by classical problem solving literature (e.g., Pólya's ``draw a diagram'' or ``work backwards''). The authors present 17 heuristic approaches. For each of them, simple problems and possible solution paths are explained in detail; in doing so the authors can draw on their comprehensive teaching experiences. This is followed by a compilation of simpler problems for practicing the respective strategy, and generally some appropriate classical problems from the problem solving literature. Finally, for each approach the authors present a collection of more demanding mathematical problems where the students should combine several already introduced strategies when tackling them.
