A \(C^{r}\) unimodal map with an arbitrary fast growth of the number of periodic points (English)

Let \(P_n(f)\) denote the number of periodic points of period \(n\) for a map \(f\). The main result of this paper proves that for any sequence \(\{a_n\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}\) and any \(r \in \mathbb{N}\) there exists a \(C^r\) unimodal interval map \(f\) such that for any \(k \in \mathbb{N}\), \(P_{3^k}(f)>a_{3^k}\). This \(f\) is \(C^\infty\) everywhere except for at the critical point. The proof is constructive and perturbs a certain \(C^\omega\) unimodal infinitely renormalizable map near some of its periodic points. The authors point out that their example also shows that the non-flatness of critical points assumption is necessary for the Martens-de Melo-van Strien theorem [\textit{M. Martens, W. de Melo} and \textit{S. van Strien}, Acta Math. 168, No. 3--4, 273--318 (1992; Zbl 0761.58007)] to hold.
