Six points/planes in the 3-space (English)
0 references
One of the open problems in the study of real hyperplane arrangements is to determine to what extent the incidence lattice of the arrangement determines the geometry of the complement of the arrangement. The authors show that for general position arrangements of \(n + 3\) hyperplanes in real \(n\)-dimensional projective space there is only one arrangement up to a continuous change of coordinates.NEWLINENEWLINENext, the authors give an explicit determination of the geometric structure of the complement of six hyperplanes in general position in real projective 3-space. The chambers of the complement consist of two cubes, six tetrahedrons, twelve triangular prisms, and six gyozas. Along with the shapes of the resulting chambers, the authors also show how the chambers are arranged. Additionally, an explicit construction is given for deforming an arrangement of planes into a general position arrangement.NEWLINENEWLINEFinally, the dual situation of six points in projective 3-space is studied. An explicit description of the possible arrangements resulting from planes spanning three out the six points is given.
