One of the standard textbooks on the history of Indian mathematics is \textit{K. Plofker}'s book [Mathematics in India. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press (2009; Zbl 1175.01004)], which contained less than 400 pages. Puttaswamy's present book on pre-modern Indian mathematics is a massive volume of more than 700 pages. The book starts with the decimal number system, then switches to the Sulvasutras, the mathematics of Jains, and the Bashkali manuscript. The next chapters are concerned with Aryabhata I, Varahamihira and Bhaskara I, Brahmagupta, Sridhara and Prthudakaswami Caturveda, Mahavira, Aryabhata II and Sripati, Bhaskara II, and Narayana Pandita. In Chapter 13 the Kerala astronomers are discussed and there is a 14th Chapter on the 16th and 17th centuries commentators of Bhaskara II. The book is unique in that its theme is mathematics and only mathematics, i.e., remarks on the history of the developments described as well as remarks on the cultural framework are missing completely. Additionally, the book is hard to use due to the absence of an index.
