A finite volume fractional-step scheme for the discretization of a nonlinear parabolic system is proposed. The numerical scheme presented is built to retain the main mathematical difficulties of the \(\mathbf P_1\) radiative diffusion physical model. Each discrete solution satisfies a priori \(L^\infty\)-estimates, through a discrete maximum principle, by a topological degree argument, yielding to the existence of a solution proved to be unique. Uniform \(L^2\)-bounds for the space and time translates are established and the limits of converging subsequences are shown to be a solution to the continuous problem. Estimates of time translates of the discrete solutions are obtained through the formalization of a generic argument. The presented numerical scheme is very promising for tackling new problems.
