The authors study the geometric genera of subvarieties of a smooth projective variety \(X\) over the complex field. It is known that the set possible geometric genera of curves on a general surface has gaps. On the other hand, there is a constant \(p\), which depends on the surface \(X\), such that for all \(g\geq p\) one finds curves of geometric genus \(g\) on \(X\). The authors extend the analysis to varieties and subvarieties of any dimension. The main result shows that for any choice of a very ample line bundle \(L\) on \(X\), and for any \(i<\dim(X)\), there exists an integer \(p:=p(X,L,i)\) such that for all \(g>p\) one finds subvarieties \(Y\subset X\) of codimension \(i\) and geometric genus \(g\), which are complete intersection of \(i\) divisors in \(|L|\) and have at most ordinary singularities.
