A group \(G\) is said to have finite rank if there exists a positive integer \(r\) such that every finitely generated subgroup of \(G\) can be generated by at most \(r\) elements, and \(G\) has infinite rank if such an \(r\) does not exist. In a series of recent papers, it has been proved that the behaviour of subgroups of finite rank in a group of infinite rank can be neglected, at least when one studies the most relevant embedding properties. In this interesting paper, the authors provide a further contribution to this topic, by considering the property of being \(S\)-permutable. Recall that a subgroup \(X\) of a periodic group \(G\) is said to be \(S\)-permutable if \(XP=PX\) for each Sylow subgroup \(P\) of \(G\). Among other results, it is proved that if \(G\) is a periodic hyper-(abelian or finite) group of infinite rank in which all subgroups of infinite rank are \(S\)-permutable, then \(G\) is locally nilpotent (and so all subgroups of \(G\) are \(S\)-permutable). The authors consider also some other natural types of ranks, and obtain results which extend (and correspond to) known results in the case of the usual rank.
