The author considers nonsmooth and nonconvex problems of the calculus of variations in infinite dimensions. By studying several special classes of codifferentiable functions, he shows that the main functional of the calculus of variations with codifferentiable integrand is codifferentiable. He derives necessary conditions for extremality of a codifferentiable function over a closed convex set. Necessary optimality conditions for the main problem of the calculus of variations and the nonsmooth problem of Bolza are also derived together with some illustrative examples.
