Min-type Morse theory for configuration spaces of hard spheres (English)
0 references
The study of the configuration spaces of hard spheres in a bounded region has a rich history, with interests in physics, mechanics, and biology. This papers uses a Morse-theoretic framework to show that certain balanced configurations of spheres play the role of critical points. Moreover, the authors find the precise threshold radius for a configuration space to be homotopy equivalent to a configuration space of points.
