    In this short note, the inequality \({\det _m}(A + B) \geqslant \det_m(A) + {\det _m}(B)\) is first derived, where \(A,B \in {\mathbb{M}_m}({\mathbb{M}_n})\) are positive semidefinite matrices and \({\mathbb{M}_n}\) denotes the set of all \(n \times n\) complex matrices and \({\mathbb{M}_m}({\mathbb{M}_n})\) stands for the algebra of \(m \times m\) block matrices with each block in \({\mathbb{M}_n}\). The main result is a new and shorter proof of inequality \(\det A \leqslant \det ({\det _m}(A))\), where \[ {\det _m}(A): = [\det {A_{i,j}}]_{i,j = 1}^m \in {\mathbb{M}_n}, \] proved firstly in [\textit{R. C. Thompson}, Can. Math. Bull. 4, 57--62 (1961; Zbl 0104.01201)].
