A new class of iterative methods is obtained. The order of convergence of the new methods without memory is eight and consists of three evaluations of the function and one evaluation of the first derivative per iteration. This class of methods corresponds with the Kung-Traub conjecture (cf. [\textit{H. T. Kung} and \textit{J. F. Traub}, J. Assoc. Comput. Mach. 21, 643--651 (1974; Zbl 0289.65023)]). Results of several numerical experiments are given.
