In this paper the author proves a variant of the Kobayashi-Lübke inequality. Let \((X,\omega )\) be a compact Kähler manifold of complex dimension \(n\) and \((E,h)\) a rank-\(r\) holomorphic Hermitian vector bundle satisfying the Hermite-Einstein condition over \((X,\omega )\). The classical Kobayashi-Lübke inequality states that, as \((n,n)\)-forms, \[ ((r-1)c_1(E,h)^2-2rc_2(E,h))\wedge\omega^{n-2}\leqq 0 \] holds at every point of \(X\) (for a more complete formulation see the first theorem on p. 1035 in the paper). Here \(c_i(E,h)\) is the Chern-Weil representative (by a connection compatible with the metric \(h\)) of the \(i^{\mathrm{th}}\) Chern class of \(E\). The author proves that there exists a similar inequality \[ s_2(E,h)\wedge\omega^{n-2}\leqq\lambda_E\frac{r+1}{2n}c_1(E,h)\wedge\omega^{n-1} \] where \(s_2(E,h)=c_1(E,h)^2-c_2(E,h)\) is the Chern-Weil representative of the \(2^{\mathrm{nd}}\) Segre class and \(\lambda_E\) is the slope of \(E\) (for a more complete formulation see Theorem 1.2 in the paper).
