This article classifies metaplectic modular categories (that is, unitary modular categories with the same fusion rules than \(\mathrm{SO} (N)_2\)) for odd N. This is done after realizing that we can obtain them from gauging all braided tensor autoequivalences of an associated \(\mathbb{Z}_N\)-cyclic modular category (``particle-hole symmetries''). The paper also provides a way to count how many metaplectic categories we obtain in case \(N\) is a product of powers of distinct odd primes, and observes that the \(\mathbb{Z}_{p^{2a}}\)-cyclic modular category is a quantum double. It concludes stating several open questions on this direction of research.
