\textit{C. Chevalley} [Tohoku Math. J. (2) 7, 14--66 (1955; Zbl 0066.01503)] famously found, for each complex semisimple Lie algebra, a basis for which the structure constants of the algebra with respect to the basis are integers. This basis, now called a Chevalley basis, has had a major impact in the ensuing years. Other proofs and generalizations appear in the literature. In the present paper, the author provides a new proof for this result.
