The local discontinuous Galerkin method is particularly appropriate to deal with reactive transport equations, since it is based on the local conservation of mass over each element and gives approximations of sharp fronts very accurately and with minimal oscillation. In order to apply this class of methods with an adaptivity strategy and thus render more efficient schemes, an a posteriori error analysis is carried out in the present paper. Specifically, an error estimate in the norm defined in the space \(L^2(L^2(\cdot)) \equiv L^2((0,T]; L^2(\cdot))\) for the semi-discrete method is obtained using duality techniques. A numerical experiment shows that this error estimate can be safely used for designing an adaptivity strategy.
