From the text: Lie pencils were introduced in [\textit{I. L. Kantor} and \textit{D. B. Persits}, ``On closed sheaves of linear Poisson brackets,'' in: IX All-Union Geometric Conference, Shtiintsa, Kishinëv, 1988, p. 141]. In the same paper, a classification of irreducible Lie pencils was obtained. Further the construction of Lie pencils was used in the study of integrability of Hamilton systems [\textit{P. J. Olver}, Applications of Lie groups to differential equations. New York etc.: Springer-Verlag (1986; Zbl 0588.22001) and \textit{V. V. Trofimov} and \textit{A. T. Fomenko}, Algebra and geometry of integrable Hamiltonian differential equations Moscow: Faktorial, Gorki: Prosperus (1995; Zbl 0858.58026)]. In particular, the equations of motion of n-dimensional solid body are Hamiltonian with respect to a family of compatible Poisson brackets constructed on the dual space \(L^*\) through a Lie pencil defined on a space \(L\). Central functions of each bracket of this family are first integrals of the initial system of equations. On the other hand, in [Russ. Math. 54, No. 2, 28--32 (2010); translation from Izv. Vyssh. Uchebn. Zaved., Mat. 2010, No. 2, 33--38 (2010; Zbl 1247.17005), (*) Sib. Math. J. 54, No. 3, 472--478 (2013); translation from Sib. Mat. Zh. 54, No. 3, 601--609 (2013; Zbl 1321.17005)], \(n\)-tuple Lie algebras were introduced by the present author. In (*), for these algebras, analogs of Engel's and Lie's theorems were proved. For \(n = 2\), the construction of an \(n\)-tuple Lie algebra was considered in [\textit{V. V. Dotsenko} and \textit{A. S. Khoroshkin}, Funct. Anal. Appl. 41, No. 1, 1--17 (2007); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 41, No. 1, 1--22 (2007; Zbl 1145.18001)] under the name of a bi-Hamiltonian operad. As one can see, the notions of a Lie pencil and an \(n\)-tuple Lie algebra coincide. Here we prove that in any simple Lie pencil over an algebraically closed field there exists a maximal torus.
