The dispersive equation, called the Kawahara equation, \[ u_t-u_{xxxxx}+bu_{xxx}+uu_x+g_1(t,x)u_x+g_0(t,x)u=f(t,x) \] is an extension of the Korteweg-de Vries equation to a higher order dispersion relation. The authors develop the theory of weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Kawahara equation. They also obtain some results on regularity and decay of solutions, the latter under suitable assumptions on the absorbing term with \(g_0\) and \(g_1\).
