\textit{H. J. Baues} [Combinatorial homotopy and 4-dimensional complexes. Berlin etc.: Walter de Gruyter (1991; Zbl 0716.55001)] introduced quadratic modules to describe the \(3\)-type of a \(CW\)-complex. The authors extend the results of \textit{Z. Arvasi} and \textit{T. Porter} [Appl. Categ. Struct. 6, No. 4, 455--471 (1998; Zbl 0923.18003)], \textit{Z. Arvasi} and \textit{E. Ulualan} [J. Homotopy Relat. Struct. 1, No. 1, 1--27 (2006; Zbl 1126.18004); Georgian Math. J. 18, No. 4, 615--637 (2011; Zbl 1254.18015)] to an algebra version of quadratic modules and continue this process to give a construction of the (totally) free quadratic module of commutative algebras in terms of the \(2\)-skeleton of a free simplicial algebra. Freeness results for reduced quadratic modules and quadratic (chain) complexes of algebras are explored as well.
