The set \(\mathcal{SUB}(G)\) of closed subgroups of a locally compact group \(G\) has a natural topology, called the \textit{Chabauty topology}, which makes it a Hausdorff compact space. This topology has been defined by \textit{C. Chabauty} [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 78, 143--151 (1950; Zbl 0039.04101)]. In the paper under review the authors study the continuity of the function \[ \lambda_G : \mathcal{SUB}(G)\times \mathcal{SUB}(G)\longrightarrow \mathcal{SUB}(G),\quad (K,L)\mapsto K\cap L. \] Among other results, it is established that for a nondiscrete locally compact group \(G\), the following statements are equivalent: (1) the map \(\lambda_G\) is continuous; (2) \(G\) is a periodic totally disconnected group in which every open compact subgroup satisfies that \(\lambda_H\) is continuous.
