The authors analyze the one-dimensional evolution problem \((\partial _{t}-a_{2}\partial _{x}+b_{2})(\partial _{t}+a_{1}\partial _{x}+b_{1})u=f\) in \( G_{d}=[0,d[\times [ 0,+\infty [ \), with the mixed boundary conditions \(\Gamma _{1}(t)u| _{x=0}:=(\alpha _{12}(t)\partial _{t}+\beta _{12}(t)\partial _{x}+\gamma _{12}(t))(\alpha _{11}(t)\partial _{t}+\beta _{11}(t)\partial _{x}+\gamma _{11}(t))u| _{x=0}=\mu _{1}(t)\), \(\Gamma _{2}(t)u| _{x=d}:=(\alpha _{22}(t)\partial _{t}+\beta _{22}(t)\partial _{x}+\gamma _{22}(t))(\alpha _{21}(t)\partial _{t}+\beta _{21}(t)\partial _{x}+\gamma _{21}(t))u| _{x=d}=\mu _{2}(t)\). The initial conditions \(u| _{t=0}=\varphi (x)\) and \(\partial _{t}u| _{t=0}=\psi (x)\) are added. The coefficients and second members are supposed to be bounded functions or constants. This intends to model the vibrations occurring in a finite string \([0,d]\) with second directional derivatives at both ends. The authors introduce the auxiliary problem \((\partial _{t}-a_{2}\partial _{x}+b_{2})(\partial _{t}+a_{1}\partial _{x}+b_{1})u=f\) in \(G_{\infty }=[0,+\infty [\, \times\, [ 0,+\infty [\, \), with the mixed boundary conditions \(\Gamma _{1}(t)u| _{x=0}=\mu _{1}(t)\) and the same initial conditions as above. In order to prove an existence and uniqueness result, the authors introduce the points \(d_{n}=(n-1)d/(a_{1}+a_{2})\), the rectangles \(G_{d}^{(n)}=[0,d]\times [ d_{n},d_{n+1}]\) and the triangles \(\Delta _{3n-2}=\{(x,t):x>a_{1}t_{n},\) \(x+a_{2}t_{n}<d\), \(x\in ]0,d[\}\), \(t_{n}=t-d_{n}\), \(\Delta _{3n-1}=\{(x,t):x\leq a_{1}t_{n}\), \(x\in\, ]0,a_{1}d_{2}[\,\}\), \(\Delta _{3n}=\{(x,t):\) \(x+a_{2}t_{n}\geq d\), \(x\in\, ]a_{1}d_{2},d[\,\}\).\ Under natural hypotheses on the data of the problem, they prove a global existence and uniqueness result for the solution \(u\in C^{2}(G_{d})\) to the original problem, and they build explicit expressions of this solution in the triangles \(\Delta _{3n-2}\), \(\Delta _{3n-1}\) and \( \Delta _{3n}\), through recursive initial conditions. For the proof, they first make use of tools from \textit{E. I. Moiseev} et al. [Dokl. Math. 90, No. 3, 748--753 (2014; Zbl 1325.35009); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk, Ross. Akad. Nauk 459, No. 5, 544--549 (2014)] that they adapt in order to get the existence of a unique solution \(u\in C^{2}(G_{\infty })\) to the auxiliary problem, and then they develop an induction procedure to solve the original problem.
