The authors give an example of an infinite metrizable space \(X\) such that \(C_p(X)\) is not homeomorphic to its square \(C_p(X) \times C_p(X)\), where \(C_p(X)\) is the the space of all real-valued continuous functions on \(X\) endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence. Precisely, they prove that this example is a rigid Bernstein set of the real line. Their result depends mainly on a previous paper by the second author [Mathematika 47, No. 1--2, 273--279 (2000; Zbl 1006.54023)]. The last section is very nice, it contains a review of the subject with several open problems.
