\textit{L. Zalcman} [Am. Math. Mon. 82, 813--817 (1975; Zbl 0315.30036)] gave a now well-known Euclidean type criterion for the normality of a family of \({\mathcal F}\) of functions \(f (z)\) meromorphic in a domain \(D\) which was later improved by \textit{H. Chen} and \textit{Y. Gu} [Sci. China, Ser. A 36, No. 6, 674--681 (1993; Zbl 0777.30018)]. In the present paper the authors make use of Chen and Gu's result to prove the following criterion for normality. Theorem 1: Let \(k\) and \(k' \) be integers with \(0\leq k'<k\), and assume that each function \(f(z)\) in the family \({\mathcal F}\) has only zeros of multiplicity at least \(k\). If for any compact subset \(K\) of \(D\), there exists positive numbers \(\delta\), \(\lambda\) and \(M\) such that \(\lambda> {2\over k-k'}\), and \(\iint_{K_f} |f^{(k)} |^\lambda \,dx\,dy \leq M\) for each \(f\in {\mathcal F}\), where \(K_f= \{\sum^{k'}_{j=0} |f^{(j)} (z)|\leq \delta\}\cap K\), then \({\mathcal F}\) is a normal family. A number of corollaries of this result are given, some of which include a previously proven criterion for normality. In another direction, the authors give additional assumptions under which Theorem 1 remains true for smaller values of \(\lambda\).
