The paper begins with the following definition: A sequence \(\{T_n\}\) of bounded linear operators on a Banach space \(X\) is called ``properly bounded'' if for every \(x\in X\) the sequence \(\{T_nx\}\) has a convergent subsequence. Now a bounded linear operator \(T\) on a Banach space \(X\) is called power bounded if the sequence \(\{T^n\}\) is bounded. The operator \(T\) is called ``properly power bounded'' if the sequence \(\{T^n\}\) is properly bounded. The main result of the paper is the following: Theorem. A bounded linear operator \(T\) on a Banach space \(X\) is properly power bounded if and only if \(T= T_1\oplus T_2\), where \(T^n_2\to 0\) in the strong operator topology, \(T_1\) is invertible, and both \(T_1\) and \(T^{-1}_1\) are properly power bounded. Furthermore, if \(X\) is a Hilbert space, then \(T_1\) is similar to a properly power bounded unitary operator.
