This book is concerned with the study of geometrical optics using a matrix method. The whole books contain 18 chapters and is divided into three parts. Part I is formed by Chapter 1 to Chapter 6, and covers the basic principles of skew-ray tracing, paraxial optics and ray aberrations. Part II spans from Chapter 7 to Chapter 14 and presents some new tools for evaluating the ray Jacobian matrices and their optical path length (OPL). Part III extends from Chapter 15 to Chapter 18 and introduces a straightforward computational scheme for calculating the ray Hessian matrices of the ray and their OPL. It is shown that the Hessian matrices of the ray and their OPL are useful in analyzing the optical aberration and waveform shape. Since the author intends to make this book a useful reference for geometrical optics courses oriented to graduate and senior undergraduate students, many illustrative examples are presented. Overall, this is an interesting book modernizing the classical subject of geometrical optics.
