Let \(\mathbb F_q\) be the finite field of \(q\) elements and \(R=\mathbb F((x^{-1}))\) the field of Laurent series over \(\mathbb F\). The authors consider \(\beta\)-expansions in \(R\) (see \textit{M. Hbaib} and \textit{M. Mkaouar} [Int. J. Number Theory 2, No. 3, 365--378 (2006; Zbl 1157.11004)] and obtain a lower bound for the number of digit changes for such expansions in a finite initial interval. This is an analogue of a result of \textit{Y. Bugeaud} [Integers 9, No. 3, 215--226, A20 (2009; Zbl 1194.11022)] who considered this question for \(\beta\)-expansions of Pisot and Salem numbers.
