This paper is a contribution to the understanding of the classifying space associated to a compact \(p\)-local group. If \({\mathcal G}\) is a \(p\)-local compact group, that is a triple \((S, {\mathcal F}, {\mathcal L})\) where \(S\) is a discrete \(p\)-local toral group, and \({\mathcal F}\) and \({\mathcal L}\) are categories whose objects are certain subgroups of \(S\), the classifying space \(B{\mathcal G}\) is the \(p\)-completed nerve \(\mid {\mathcal L}\mid ^{\wedge}_{p}\). The paper shows how one can construct, by a process analogous to \textit{G. R. Robinson}'s amalgams [ibid. 314, No. 2, 912--923 (2007; Zbl 1184.20024)], a group \(G\) and a split epimorphism \(\omega:\mathrm{Out}(G) \rightarrow\mathrm{Out}(B{\mathcal G})\). Under certain circumstances the map \(\omega\) is shown to be an isomorphism.
