Let \(T\) be a (bounded linear) Hilbert-space operator. Suppose that \(T\) is a contraction (i.e., \(\|T\|\leq1\)), and let \(A\) be the strong limit of the operator sequence \(\{T^{*n}T^n\}\). Since \(T\) is a contraction, \(A\) is a nonnegative contraction (i.e., \(0\leq A\leq I\)). Moreover, \(A\) satisfies the following property: \(A=T^*AT\). It is known that the kernel of \(A-A^2\) is the largest (closed) subspace of \(H\) which is \(T\)-invariant and is included in the kernel of \(TA-AT\). This implies that \(A\) is idempotent if and only if \(A\) and \(T\) commute. Contractions \(T\) for which \(A\) is idempotent (i.e., for which \(A\) is an orthogonal projection) have shown to play an important role in several aspects concerning Hilbert-space operator theory. The paper under review extends the above picture towards further classes of Hilbert-space operators \(T\) (beyond contractions) satisfying some regularity conditions. In particular, they consider the so-called \(A\)-contractions and \(A\)-isometries.
