The paper deals with the direct and inverse Cauchy problems for the quasilinear equation \[ \frac{\partial f}{\partial t}+ \varphi (f) \frac{\partial f}{\partial x} =0;\quad x \in \mathbb R; t>0, \] of the Riemann type with the initial condition \[ f((x,0)= f^0(x), \] where \(f^0(x)\) is a continuous real function of bounded variation on \(R\) such that \[ f^0(x)= \begin{cases} \alpha^{-} ,\;x \leq x^{-} \\ g(x), \;x^{-} \leq x \leq x^{+} \\ \alpha^{+} ,\;x \geq x^{+}. \end{cases} \] Gelfand's problem for the large time asymptotics of the solution of the Cauchy problem is considered. Exact asymptotics in the Cauchy-Gelfand problem is obtained and the initial data parameters responsible for the localization of the shock waves are described on the basis of the vanishing viscosity method with uniform estimates without the a priori monotonicity assumption for the initial data.
