Let \(R\) be a prime ring with characteristic different from \(2\) and let \(I\) be a nonzero ideal of \(R\). A map \(d: I\to R\) is said to be a derivation if \(d(xy)=d(x)y+xd(y)\) for all \(x,y\in I\), and a map \(F: I\to R\) is said to be a generalized derivation associated with the derivation \(d\) if \(F(xy)=F(x)y+xd(y)\) for all \(x,y\in I\) (see [\textit{T.-K. Lee}, Commun. Algebra 27, No. 8, 4057--4073 (1999; Zbl 0946.16026)]). The authors show that if there exists a generalized derivation \(F\) associated with a derivation \(d\) and a positive integer \(m\) such that \([[\dots[F(x),d(y)],_m{\ldots}],d(y)]=[x,y]\) for all \(x,y\in I\), then \(R\) is commutative. They also consider the case when \(R\) is a semiprime ring.
