Consider a commutative field \(K\), the power series ring \(K[[X]]\) and the polynomial ring \(K[X]\) with coefficients in \(K\). For \(f\in K[[X]]\) (resp. \(K[X]\)), \(o(f)\) (resp., \(d(f)\)) denotes the order (resp., the degree) of \(f\). Consider now a finite set \(f_1,\ldots,f_s\) of elements in \(K[[X]]\) (resp. \(K[X]\)) and the subalgebra \(R=K[[f_1,\ldots,f_s]]\) (resp. \(A=K[f_1,\ldots,f_s]\)) of \(K[[X]]\) (resp. \(K[X]\)). The sets \(o(R)=\{o(f),f\in R\}\) and \(d(A)=\{d(f),f\in A\}\) are submonoids of \(\mathbb{N}\). The purpose of this paper is to describe an algorithm that calculates generating systems of \(o(R)\) and \(d(A)\). Many applications are given.
