The object of study of this paper is the normal sheaf \(\mathcal N_X\) of a (standard) determinantal scheme \(X\). As a special case, the authors obtain stronger results assuming that the matrix whose maximal minors define \(X\) has linear entries. Here are some of their main results, always under some mild assumptions (we will not repeat this phrase). First, although \(\mathcal N_X\) is not arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) when \(X\) has codimension \(c \geq 3\), the authors show that there exists an invertible sheaf \(\mathcal L\) on \(X \backslash \text{Sing}(X)\) such that \(\mathcal N_X \otimes \mathcal L\) is ACM. Second, assuming the entries are linear they show that \(\mathcal N_X \otimes \mathcal L\) is not only ACM but even Ulrich. Third, they show \(\mathcal N_X\) is simple (hence indecomposable). Fourth, again assuming linear entries, they show \(\mathcal N_X\) is \(\mu\)-(semi)stable.
