The aim of this paper is to provide a constructive method for defining an optimal ideal space containing a given cone of measurable functions. Starting from the classical approach to the definition of (quasi) Banach function spaces by means of function norms (\textit{C. Bennett} and \textit{R. Sharpley}'s approach [Interpolation of operators. Boston, MA etc.: Academic Press, Inc. (1988; Zbl 0647.46057)]) and using two fundamental theorems proved by the author and Gol'dman in previous works, new results are provided. These theorems give the method, which is based on the definition of a nonlinear operator from the space of measurable functions to the corresponding cones of positive functions. Together with a function norm, this provides the way, given a cone \(K_0\), to obtain a minimal ideal space \(X\) with respect to the embedding of the cone in \(X\). Recall that in this approach, the Fatou property of the (generalized) function norm is assumed. Centering the attention on some particular cases (cone of generalized doubly monotone functions), the author shows a complete characterization of the optimality of the generated ideal space (Theorem 3.1). More results of this kind are obtained for the case of rearrangement-invariant spaces for cones of doubly monotone functions (Section 4), and with some additional constraints in Section 5. The same is done for the case of cones of nonnegative generalized decreasing functions in Section 6 and for cones in Lebesgue spaces with variable exponent.
