In the paper under review, the authors study a certain type of automorphisms, the so-called palindromic automorphisms, in groups which are free in a variety. Among other results, it is shown that in the case of free nilpotent groups the set of these automorphisms is a group. Special attention is given to free nilpotent groups of class \(2\) or \(3\).
