Let \(g \geq 3\), and take a compact unbordered non-orientable surface \(S_g\) of genus \(g\). \textit{E. Bujalance} proved in [Pac. J. Math. 109, 279--289 (1983; Zbl 0545.30033)] that the order of the automorphisms of \(S_g\) is bounded above by \(2g\) and \(2(g-1)\) for \(g\) odd or even, respectively. In the paper under review, the authors consider automorphisms of \(S_g\) of order \(N > g-2\). If such an automorphism exists, the quotient orbifold \(S_g / \mathbb{Z}_N\) is one of the following: a Klein bottle with one cone point, an annulus with one cone point, a Möbius strip with one cone point, a disc with two or three cone points, or a projective plane with two or three cone points. For each of these possibilities, the authors obtain the number of topological types of the action of \(\mathbb{Z}_N\) on \(S_g\), up to topological conjugation. A further step is given in Section 4, with a detailed study of the case \(N > \max \{g, \frac{3}{2}(g-2)\}\).
