The authors prove the following theorem (Theorem 2.2): Suppose that there is a Galois number field $K$ with the property that if $p_1$ and $p_2$ are primes whose corresponding Artin symbols over $K$ are equal then $2^i$-rank$(Cl(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p_1}))=2^i$-rank$(Cl(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p_2}))$ for $1\leq i\leq 4$. Then for any non-negative integers $r_4$ and $r_8$ satisfying $1\geq r_4\geq r_8\geq 0$, there are infinitely many primes $p\equiv 1\mod{8}$ such that $4$-rank$(K_2(\mathcal{O}_F)=r_4$ and $8$-rank$(K_2(\mathcal{O}_F)=r_8$ where $F=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$. \par The initial hypothesis is a conjecture of Cohn and Lagarias. The conclusion of the theorem is a very special case of a general conjecture of H. Qin about the existence of certain real quadratic fields whose tame kernels have prescribed $2^i$-ranks. The authors use the $2$-rank formulae for the tame kernel $K_2(\mathcal{O})$ of Browkin and Schinzel, the results of Qin on $2^i$-ranks of $K_2(\mathcal{O})$ and certain congruences for orders of class groups and tame kernels due to Urbanowicz and Williams.
