Fourier analytic approach to quantum estimation of group action (English)
    20 October 2016
Algorithms for the optimal estimation of quantum states in finite dimensional systems have been shown to be an important tool in the description of reversible dynamics by means of unitary projective representations of groups, albeit currently only a limited number of cases has been analyzed in detail [\textit{R. Derka} et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, No. 8, 1571--1575 (1998; Zbl 0946.81008)]. In this exhaustive work, the author provides a unified approach to Quantum Estimation of Group Action based on Fourier analysis. Specifically, the author derives two formulae for the minimum error in the estimation of group actions based in the inverse Fourier transform, with and without energy contraint respectively. Besides an alternative derivation of already known formulas for the case of compact groups, the author focuses on the asymptotic computation of the minimum error and the asymptotically optimal estimator for the groups \(\mathrm U(1)\), \(\mathrm{SU}(2)\), \(\mathrm{SO}(3)\) and the Heisenberg representation in \(\mathbb{R}^2\). A comparison of the results derived by this approach and the known results for finite groups is given, showing in particular how to recover the latter from the former. In an Appendix, the properties on the Mathieu equation and functions used in the text are briefly reviewed.
