This interesting paper presents the revised and expanded version of the underground thesis of the author [Lifting symplectic Galois representations. Harvard University (2006)], written under R. Taylor's supervision. The main result (Theorem 1.2, Theorem 8.4 and Theorem 10.6) of the paper under review is the construction of geometric Galois representation with monodromy group equal any of simple algebraic group \(G\) of exceptional types \(G_{2}, F_{4}, E_{7}, E_{8} \) (for \(G\) of type \(E_{6}\) , the algebraic monodromy group of \(\rho_{l}|_{\mathrm{Gal} (K/{\mathbb Q})}\) is the dual group \(G^{v}\) for any appropriate quadratic imaginary extension \( K/{\mathbb Q}\). The proof uses a quite novel method by the author. Author's results and the method are motivated partially by approaches and results by \textit{J.-P. Serre} [Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 55, 377--400 (1994; Zbl 0812.14002)], by \textit{R. Ramakrishna} [Ann. Math. (2) 156, No. 1, 115--154 (2002; Zbl 1076.11035)], by \textit{M. Dettweiler} and \textit{S. Reiter} [Compos. Math. 146, No. 4, 929--963 (2010; Zbl 1194.14036)] and by \textit{Z. Yun} [Invent. Math. 196, No. 2, 267--337 (2014; Zbl 1374.14013)]. Geometric deformations are understood in the sense of Fontaine-Mazur [\textit{J.-M. Fontaine} and \textit{B. Mazur}, in: Elliptic curves, modular forms, \& Fermat's last theorem. Proceedings ot the conference on elliptic curves and modular forms held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1993. Cambridge, MA: International Press. 41--78 (1995; Zbl 0839.14011)]. See also papers by \textit{B. Mazur} [in: Galois groups over \({\mathbb{Q}}\), Proc. Workshop, Berkeley/CA (USA) 1987, Publ., Math. Sci. Res. Inst. 16, 385--437 (1989; Zbl 0714.11076)] and by \textit{J.-M. Fontaine} [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 94, No. 21, 11138--11141 (1997; Zbl 0901.11016)]. The axiomatization of the Ramakrishna's method for annihilating the dual Selmer group is also given. In addition, some related problems are considered: liftable local deformation conditions that include ordinary, Ramakrishna and Steinberg deformations; exceptional monodromy groups of Steinberg type; deformation theory for \(L\)-groups. Finally the author deals (Theorem 10.6) with deformations with monodromy group \({E}_6\).
