Let \(\mathfrak{g}\) be the Lie algebra of a reductive algebraic group \(G\) that is defined over an algebraically closed field \(\mathbf{F}\) of prime characteristic \(p\). In [Am. J. Math. 112, No. 3, 375--395 (1990; Zbl 0714.17007)] \textit{E. M. Friedlander} and \textit{B. J. Parshall} asked to find necessary and sufficient conditions for the simplicity of a \(\mathfrak{g}\)-module that is induced from a simple module over a parabolic subalgebra of \(\mathfrak{g}\). This question has been answered by \textit{V. G. Kac} for \(\mathfrak{sl}_3(\mathbf{F})\) [Usp. Mat. Nauk 27, No. 5(167), 237--238 (1972; Zbl 0262.17002)], and by \textit{Y.-Y. Li} et al. for \(\mathfrak{sl}_4 (\mathbf{F})\) [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 219, No. 4, 760--766 (2015; Zbl 1332.17008)]. Moreover, in a preprint [``A criterion for (the) irreducibility of parabolic baby Verma modules of reductive Lie algebras'', \url{arXiv.1404.4945}] \textit{Y.-Y. Li} et al. gave a sufficient condition for the simplicity of these modules for \(\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_n(\mathbf{F})\), \(\mathfrak{so}_n (\mathbf{F})\), or \(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}(\mathbf{F})\) when the \(p\)-character is of standard Levi form. The author of the paper under review proves that a \(\mathfrak{g}\)-module induced from a simple module over a parabolic subalgebra \(\mathfrak{p}\) of \(\mathfrak{g}\) is simple if, and only if, a certain polynomial function on the linear dual of a common Cartan subalgebra of \(\mathfrak{g}\) and \(\mathfrak{p}\) does not vanish on the highest weight of the simple \(\mathfrak{p}\)-module. For this result to hold it is assumed that \(G\) has a simply connected derived subgroup, the characteristic \(p\) of the ground field \(\mathbf{F}\) is good for \(\mathfrak{g}\), and there exists a \(G\)-invariant non-degenerate bilinear form on \(\mathfrak{g}\). Moreover, the author has to suppose that the \(p\)-character of the induced module vanishes on the unipotent radical of the opposite parabolic subalgebra of \(\mathfrak{p}\). As an application of the author's simplicity criterion a new short proof of a result of \textit{B. Yu. Weisfeiler} and \textit{V. G. Kac} [Funct. Anal. Appl. 5, 111--117 (1971; Zbl 0237.17003); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 5, No. 2, 28--36 (1971)] is obtained.
