An initial boundary value problem for the dissipative wave equation in an unbounded domain of \( \mathbb R^n\) is considered. The purpose of the paper is to improve some known results on the total energy of solutions. One refers to the article of \textit{K. Mochizuki} and \textit{H. Nakazawa} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 32, No. 3, 401--414 (1996; Zbl 0864.35066)]. Under some new assumptions on the damping term and for each compactly supported smooth initial data, the same energy inequality as in the mentioned paper is proved. An example of a damping term generating energy decay is shown.
