The author considers a one-dimensional linear transport equation under initial and boundary value conditions on a region \([0,L]\) by \([0,T]\). For a numerical solution of the problem finite difference schemes with an adaptive artificial viscosity approach are proposed. The schemes are constructed on a uniform grid and have third-order approximation in time and first-order in space. Monotonicity, stability and convergence are investigated and proved. The schemes can be applied selectively to provide monotonicity and/or stability when these properties are difficult to obtain in some sub-regions. Numerical examples are given which show the best results of convergence and stability in \(L^1\) and \(L^2\) norms, and especially for high values of \(T\) and \(L\) in comparison to other existing type of finite difference schemes.
