In this paper the authors consider the existence and variational characterization of the weak solutions of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for singular second-order ordinary differential equations when the solution appears to be the minimizer of the associated action functional and also the system of coupled equations in which case the solution is a Nash-type equilibrium of the set of energy functionals. In order to tackle their problem, the authors firstly develop an abstract scheme in which, using Michlin type problems, they provide some general existence results. In their proofs they link critical points to the action functional to fixed points of suitably constructed operators. Next, applications are provided. Examples of nonlinear terms fulfilling the assumptions imposed on nonlinear terms end the paper.
