The author translates the description of the Painlevé VI family of differential equations in terms of a universal elliptic curve, going back to R. Fuchs, into the formalism of Buium's $p$-adic arithmetic differential equations [\textit{A. Buium}, Arithmetic differential equations. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (2005; Zbl 1088.14001)], where the usual derivative $df/dt$ applied to functions $f$ of $t$ is replaced by (a version of) the Fermat quotient $(f-f_p)/p$ applied to numbers $f$, derivating them ``in $p$-adic direction''.
