In this book the authors study multivariate wavelet frames with a matrix dilation in \(L_2(\mathbb R^d)\). The constructions used are based on multiresolution analyses and the multivariate wavelets are non-separable and thus one-dimensional wavelets only appear in some basic examples. Chapter 1 contains a well written overview of bases and frames in Hilbert spaces and in Chapter 2 the authors study the problem of constructing biorthogonal wavelet bases using a multiresolution analysis. A key feature due to the multivariate setting is a matrix extension problem that arises when one constructs wavelets masks. Even in the one-dimensional case the necessary and sufficient conditions for obtaining a wavelet basis starting from a refinement equation are quite complicated and hence the authors in Chapter 3 study what conditions are needed for a dual wavelet system generated from refinable functions to be only a frame and not necessarily a basis. The construction of tight and compactly supported frames with arbitrary approximation order is studied as well. In chapter 4 the authors study a wider class of wavelet systems that are not frames but preserve important properties of frames. The construction is again based on the matrix extension principle but simpler than that of frames. In Chapter 5 the authors study wavelets that are symmetric with respect to some symmetry group and in Chapter 6 they study the smoothness of wavelets using the refinement equation and results on the joint spectral radius of a set of matrices. Wavelet theory is a highly technical subject and it is a challenge to present the theory without getting bogged down with cumbersome notation and details but the authors succeed in doing a good job in this respect.
