The authors study the evolution of the static/flowing interface in viscoplastic granular flows. Under several assumptions, a set of equations is analytically derived to model the dynamics of such an interface. The resulting system is an initial boundary problem in the variable normal to the topography in the flowing region, with a extra boundary condition which comes out from the continuity of the velocity and shear stress across the static/flowing interface. This model is more general than the known depth-averaged models.
