The authors study the boundary value problem \[ \begin{aligned} &u''(t)- ku(t)= f(t,u(t), u'(t)),\\ &\lim_{t\to\pm\infty}\, u(t)= 0,\quad \lim_{t\to\pm\infty}\, u'(t)= 0\end{aligned}\leqno{(\ast)} \] under the assumptions \(k>0\), \(f:\mathbb R^3\to\mathbb R\) is an \(L^1\)-Carathéodory function. By means of lower and upper solutions they derive conditions on \(f\) such that \((\ast)\) has a solution. An example (Duffing-like equation) is presented.
