Let \(X\) be a compact Riemann surface of genus at most 1, i.e., the Riemann sphere or a torus, and let \(W\) be a proper subdomain of \(X\). If \(V\) is a domain in \(X\) intersecting \(\partial W\), a component of \(V\cap W\) is called a boundary component of \(W\). A holomorphic map \(g:W\to X\) is said to have the Ahlfors islands property if there exists an integer \(k\) such that if \(V_1,\dots,V_k\) are Jordan domains in \(X\) with pairwise disjoint closures and if \(U\) is a boundary component of \(W\), then there exists \(j\in \{1,\dots,k\}\) and a Jordan domain \(Y\) in \(U\) which is mapped conformally onto \(V_j\) by \(g\). The name is chosen because of the Ahlfors five islands theorem which says that the conclusion holds if \(W\) is the complex plane, \(X\) is the Riemann sphere and \(g\) is a transcendental meromorphic function. It was shown by \textit{R. Oudkerk} [``Ahlfors functions with exotic Baker domains'', manuscript (2004)], \textit{A. Epstein} and \textit{R. Oudkerk} [``Iteration of Ahlfors and Picard functions which overflow their domains'', manuscript] and \textit{I. N. Baker} et al. [Complex Variables, Theory Appl. 49, No. 2, 95--100 (2004; Zbl 1052.37035)] that many results of the Fatou-Julia theory extend to maps with the Ahlfors islands property. In the present paper, such maps with certain ``pathological'' dynamical behavior are constructed. For example, the authors construct a function with a wandering domain having a prescribed \(\omega\)-limit set. They also construct a function with a Baker domain where the \(\omega\)-limit set consists of the accumulation set of a given curve tending to the boundary of \(W\). (It is known that the \(\omega\)-limit set must be of this form.) The proofs use complex approximation theory.
