For a \(2\pi\)-periodic, Lebesgue measurable and essentially bounded function \(p(x)\), let \(L^p\) be the space of \(2\pi\)-periodic, measurable functions, \(f\), for which \(|f|^{p(x)}\) has a finite integral on \((-\pi, \pi)\). If \(p\) is essentially bounded and essentially bounded below by \(1\), then \(L^p\) can be assigned a norm that makes it a Banach space. The paper develops properties and inequalities related to the norm; and uses these to prove, in this setting, theorems on the rates of convergence analogous to (and generalizing) classically important theorems. These include results on Bernstein inequalities and on Fourier series.
