The purpose of this paper is to prove that some integrable hierarchies are equivalent to the simplest equations of their addition formulae. The author studies the KP, the modified KP (mKP) and the BKP hierarchies. The paper consists of three sections and three appendices. In Section 2, the author considers the KP hierarchy. The key point is to prove the equivalence between the KP hierarchy and its infinite sequence of addition formulae. Since this case is fundamental, the details are given. Then he considers the mKP hierarchy in Section 3. The arguments which are similar to the KP hierarchy are omitted. In Section 4, he studies the BKP hierarchy. The Pfaffians are necessary in this case. Necessary properties of Pfaffians including the definition are reviewed in Appendices A, B and C.
