    M. Barr, J. A. Goguen and J. Meseguer proved that the class of all pure heterogeneous algebras of a given type, or the class of pure heterogeneous algebras in a certain variety, is equivalent to a variety of single-sorted algebras. However, the types or defining identities for the single-sorted variety are not given explicitly. In the present paper, the authors solve the problem of determining good sets of explicit defining identities and quasi-identities for the variety of single-sorted algebras equivalent to the class of all pure heterogeneous algebras of a given type. The complexity of the identities defining the variety is a linear function of the number of sorts and the arity of the fundamental operations. The converse process of heterogenization is described in Section 9. The results are demonstrated on algebras with so-called diagonal operations.
