Let \(R = k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]\) denote the polynomial ring in \(n\)-variables over the field \(k\). Let \(I \subset R\) denote a homogeneous ideal with initial degree \(p\). Suppose that \(R/I\) is a Gorenstein algebra with \(h\)-vector \((h_0,h_1,\ldots,h_s)\). Then \(s \geq 2(p-1)\) and \(R/I\) is called an extremal Gorenstein ring if equality holds. This notion was invented by the reviewer [J. Algebra 64, 93--101 (1980; Zbl 0449.13008)] where the Hilbert series and the Betti numbers in a minimal free resolution are described. In the paper under review the author calls \(R/I\) \(c\)-deficiently extremal whenever \(s = 2(p-1) +c\). Then there is a characterization of \(c\)-deficiently extremal Gorenstein rings in terms of their minimal free resolution and their Hilbert series resp. This generalizes results of \textit{C. Kumar} et al. [Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 75, No. 2, 211--220 (2007; Zbl 1120.13023)] where the case of \(1\)-deficiently Gorenstein rings is treated. As a byproduct there is a characterization of Stanley-Reisner rings having 2-pure but not 2-linear resolutions originally proved by \textit{W. Bruns} and \textit{T. Hibi} [Commun. Algebra 23, No. 4, 1201--1217 (1995; Zbl 0823.13015)].
